  • What Uses Wood Varnish?
Wood protective varnish is a liquid solution used as a protective layer that prevents the wood from being moistened and eroded and increases its durability against external factors.
The protective layer function is the most familiar feature of the varnish. It is applied on wood as a preservative. It also makes wooden surfaces and items that have been used for a long time look like new. With water-repellent wood varnishes, moisture is prevented on the wood. It also protects the wood against UV rays.
    Wood Varnish Types
Wood varnishes are divided into two as water-based varnish and solvent-based varnish.
Differences Between Water Based Wood Varnish and Solvent Based Wood Varnish
The service life of water-based and solvent-based varnishes is the same. There are some differences due to the chemical structure of the raw materials used in its production.
    1. The water-based varnish is odorless and environmentally friendly. Solvent-based varnish has an odor of the thinner used in production.
    2. As the wood absorbs the water-based varnish more, the water-based wood varnish gives a natural look.
    3. Water-based wood varnish dries faster.
    4. Water-based wood varnish is safer for health as it has less VOC value.
How Should Wood Varnish Selection Be?
Wooden varnishes that are sensitive to human and environmental health, nature-friendly, do not contain heavy metals and lead, and have toy safety certificate should be preferred.
It is also important that the varnish is a breathable varnish, it prolongs the life of the wood.
It is important that you choose a wood varnish that provides strong protection against sun rays for exterior and exterior woods.
If you want the wood to preserve its natural texture and appearance, a translucent varnish should be used.
The wood varnish to be used for applying on wooden floors should be non-slip.

What is a breathing wood varnish/wood stain and why is it important?
Breathable paints and varnishes are products that form a water-proof but water-vapor-permeable layer on the applied surface. A small crack that may occur on the surface as a result of cracking of the wood used outdoors due to precipitation and changes in humidity in the air or receiving a small blow may cause the wood to get wet. The drying of this water, which wets the wood under the layer, is very important for the life of the paint and wood. Keeping the wood wet for a long time causes both paint loss and rotting of the wood. Breathable varnish/paint prevents this. It also penetrates the wood well and has the flexibility to work with wood.
Wood Color Varnish Colors and Prices
In wood varnishing application, if the natural texture of the wood is not to be lost, semi-transparent varnish should be used.
Wood protective colored varnishes are available in many different color options. Click to see the rich wood varnish colors and color charts produced by Hemel for water and solvent based exterior and floors and to learn about wood varnish prices!
    Tips for Wood Varnish Application
While applying wood varnish, a sanding should be done between the coats in order to improve the final appearance and to get the desired performance from the paint.
For good wood protection, it is important to apply the product to the head of the wood. Thus, water repellency is provided to the head parts of the wood that receive the most water.
Make sure that the edges of the wood you are going to varnish are rounded. In sharp corners, the varnish does not hold sufficiently and the film thickness remains weak. This sharp corner may cause the wood to absorb water and cause the product to flake off.
In exterior varnish applications, the design of wooden details in such a way that water does not accumulate on the surface, which will flow, significantly increases the service life of the product.
